Commemoration Bureau for celebration of 50th Anniversary of Indian Republic


The Government of India is celebrating 50th Anniversary of Indian Republic beginning from
26th January, 2000 to 25th January, 2001. The theme of celebration is
"Confident and Resurgent India Marching Ahead".

A Commemoration Bureau has been set up to organise the activities relating to commemoration.
The Bureau has been assigned the task of organizing the celebrations as per direction of the
Implementation Committee.

Sub-Committee on Reforms have subsequently decided to organise National level Seminars in following fields and at following locations –

Administrative Reforms - at Mumbai

Electoral Reforms - at Calcutta

Judicial Reforms - at Chennai

Developmental Reforms - at Bangalore

Educational Reforms - at New Delhi

This would involve initiation of debate on key areas of reforms such as Administrative Reforms, Development Reforms, Educational Reforms, Electoral Reforms and Judicial Reforms.
From each of these Seminars country wide debate will be launched by entrusting NGOs and eminent personalities the task of generating such a debate. For this purpose, Organising Committees would be set up who will ensure countrywide participation in the debate on these reforms. Finally, national seminars are likely to be held in the month of November and December, 2000.

Recommendations on reforms finalised in these Seminars would be suitably printed and submitted to the Implementation Committee by 26th January, 2001.

An Implementation Committee has been constituted under the Chairmanship of Minister of
Tourism & Culture for chalking out the programmes/ projects and for providing guidance in implementation of these programmes

The following Sub-Committees have been constituted for chalking out and implementation of programmes / projects in different fields.

Details of the members of these Committees may be seen on following pages.

Emphasis in commemoration is on creation of permanent assets. While 70% of the expenditure on commemoration which would be on a national scale would be on creation of permanent assets, 30% would be used for debates, seminars and other events. A beginning has already been made in this regard. A Multi-Purpose Cultural Complex is being set up at Leh and the foundation stone has already been laid by the Prime Minister of India.

 

 

 

 

Activities / events already held
The Bureau has organized following activities / events so far to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Republic.

    • Launch of Logo for Republic-50 celebrations on 21.1.2000. The logo is being used on all government stationary and events connected with 50 years of Republic. The logo has been sent to all State Government and our Missions abroad for use by them.

    • Illumination of all important government buildings all along from Rajpath to India Gate from 26th January, to 29th January as part of the celebrations.

    • A signature float was put up by Department of Culture in this year’s Republic Day Parade named "We, the People of India" showcasing the strength of our Republic. The Float won second prize among 31 tableaux presented on the Republic Day Parade.

    • The concluding item of the Republic Day Parade named "Drums of India" was also organized to depict cultural variety and underlying unity of the country through display of common music by 250 drummers from different parts of India.

    • Special functions were organized in State Capitals on 26th January, 2000.

    • A special function was held in the Central Hall of Parliament on 27th January, 2000 in which Calligraphed copy of the Original Constitution of India was released alongwith commemorative stamps and a CD "Jana Gana Mana" on the National Anthem.

    • A large cultural spectacle involving youth named "Ganatantra Gaurav" was organized on 27.1.2000 in National Stadium with the theme of "Salute to Motherland" where Hon’ble Prime Minister was the Chief Guest.

    • An Exhibition entitled "We, the People of India" was organized through National Archives of India. This depicted the unity in diversity concept.

    • A mobile exhibition on Indian System of Law and 50 years of Supreme Court of India was put up in the National Museum. The exhibition is to be held at eight cities in India. It has already been held at Patna, Calcutta, Cuttak and Hyderabad.

    • A function was held in Calcutta on 6th July, 2000 to celebrate Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s Birth Centenary. On the occasion, a campaign for reforms was also launched.

    • In association with the Department of Tourism, Sindhu Darshan Festival was organized at Leh from 7th to 9th June, 2000 which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister. Several Artists from Zonal Cultural Centres under the administrative control of Department of Culture participated in the Mahotsav.

    • A Multi-purpose Cultural Complex is being set up at Leh as part of the permanent assets, foundation stone of which has been laid by the Prime Minister while inaugurating Sindhu Darshan Festival.

Permanent Assets
Celebration

 

Permanent Assets :

    >>Setting up of Dr. S.P. Mookerjee Institute of Democratic Governance. The institute would train elected representatives from grass roots level to the members of legislatures in the art of democratic governance. The institute is likely to be set up at New Delhi or any other suitable location that may be identified by the Implementation Committee, it would have its own campus, hostel, library etc.

    >>Strengthening of infrastructure of institutions in North-East such as Vivekananda Kendra in Guwahati and Ramakrishna Mission.

    >>Setting up of Bharat Gramodaya Darshan Park in different parts of the country with joint efforts of Khadi & Village Industries Commission, Zonal Cultural Centres and Rural Development Department. (CAPART). These parks will bring together artisans, handicraftsmen, rural people and showcase achievements in the field of rural technology and agriculture.

      >>A Multipurpose Cultural Complex at Leh in Jammu & Kashmir is planned as a permanent asset created on the occasion of 50th Anniversary of Indian Republic. The Complex would promote distinct Ladakhi Culture which is famous world over and attract lot of tourists.

      >>Setting up of Bharat Darshan Science / Culture Parks in Bangalore and Delhi.

    • Gantantra Gaurav Mahotsav in all States/UTs at two locations - one in a village and one in a city.
    • Essay and painting competition "My Idea of Democracy " in States/UTs.
    • International Seminar on "India a success story of Democratic Governance" in New Delhi / London / any SAARC country capital.
    • A docu-drama on "Achievements of Democracy".
    • A Samajik Sankalp to be taken up by all Gram Sabhas on 26th January, 2001.
    • One time award to best Zilla Parishads, Nagar Palikas, Taluka Parishads and Gram Panchayats on 26th January, 2001.
    • Launching of "Feel Good" campaign through print and electronic media.
    • Holding of an exhibition to create awareness among the citizens about their basic rights and duties towards the country.
    • To bring out a publication on republican traditions in India from ancient times to modern age entitled "Gantantra Ki Virasat".
    • Commemorative coins to be released on 26th January, 2001.
    • A Portal "Pride of India" to be launched.
